Chronicle of a deaf audiologist

Not ready for hearing aids yet? You can still do something

Too often, when a mild hearing loss is diagnosed, and the person with hearing loss (PWHL) is not yet ready for hearing aids, the journey stops right there.

Hear me out on this short video (53 seconds):

The “synthetic” approach (see below) of the LACE AI program makes it a suitable choice for people with mild hearing loss who need hearing aids but may not yet be ready to commit.

A synthetic approach does not focus on distinguishing individual speech sounds; instead, it uses sentences as stimuli rather than isolated sounds, syllables, or words. Synthetic methods prioritize overall comprehension of meaning rather than understanding every single word. Through regular training, you can improve your ability to listen under challenging conditions, such as in background noise or rapid conversation. This enables you to more effectively participate in conversations.

Anecdotally, an audiologist who worked with a synthetic auditory training program said that she has witnessed people with untreated hearing loss becoming more aware that they are missing information through auditory training.
