As an audiologist who is deaf, I use all of these strategies. Often when I smile and pretend to understand (#1), I am hoping I will figure it out if the person gives me just a bit more context/information (#2). But that can backfire if it goes on too long. Asking people to slow down is a great strategy (#3). But I think the very best thing to do is disclose my hearing loss (#4). It makes all the other strategies go more smoothly.
